Linux NIS client does not use the ipnodes map of NIS

Linux NIS client is bound to a Solaris NIS Slave/Master (either one) and can access all the MAPS except ipnodes. ipnodes MAP is seen by Solaris 10 NIS Clients but not Linux. (RH 3 /4/ 5/ 6)
Linux can do a ypcat -k ipnodes.byname << works !! ypcat -k ipnodes << Doesn't WORK
FYI: I put our IPV6 addresses in the ipnodes MAP.
Linux client can ping IPV6 addresses.
I added the "ipnodes: files nis" entry to the nsswitch.conf << Doesn't WORK
If I put the IPV6 entries in DNS or the local /etc/hosts file it works !!
I have not found that this is intentional by Linux clients .. but it appears to be
Any info/documentation as to Linux only using DNS for IPV6 would be appreciated
