Linux Networking 101 : any good guides ?

Hi all ! You can call me gzou.

So, here's my situation : ever since I discovered linux 2 years ago I have abandonned windows and have marveled at what you can accomplish at even better rates than windows with free software. I do picture editing, document writing, internet browsing, CD burning, pretty much everything on linux. But I don't know anything about networking.

I've got an old Pentium I 166 mhz with windows 95 on it and I'm thinking of putting something like Damn Small Linux on it and connecting it through ethernet to the main computer so that If ever anyone else in the house needs to the main computer I can go write out college essays on it or other stuff like that on the Pentium I and access files through the ethernet connection when needed. But, like I said, I don't know too much how networking 2 computers together under linux works. I'm pretty sure that the domain name is going to come up somewhere when connecting from one to the other, but that's it.

So, I was wondering if anyone around had any tips, tricks to suggest or even know good web sites where they explain how to network linux for novices like me. That's it !

Of, by The way, I'm mainly running Xubuntu edgy on my main computer, So another question would be If I put Damn small on the other will networking still work ?

Thanks in advance !
