Linux / MacOS Network

I was just thinking if a LAN between Linux and Mac would work fine as Linux to Linux since MacOS X is Unix based. Or would be needed something similar to Samba?
I'd like to hear from you.

a lan would just be ethernet. absolutely any system that can speak ethernet can be on a lan... if you mean you want to allow file sharing on the network, then afaik OS X supports NFS natively so you don't need samba. the existance of a file server doesn't make it a LAN or not though, you need to be clear what you are actually asking for.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but I meant file sharing and thanks for the information.
