Linux is handing

Hi,

I'm using Red Hat Linux 7.2
kernal - 2.4.7-10

I can boot linux into X server (GUI).
And if i press ctrl+alt+2, it goes to TTY2 Shell Session smoothly.
And i have my GUI in 7th session.
Sometimes, while going to shell, the GUI get hang. And not accepting any
key strokes. And the only way to recover from this is to directly power off
the PC. I tried reinstallation also. But it didn't work for me.

Can any one help me plsssssssss?

thanx in advance

The key combination to exit the X server is Ctrl-Alt-Backslash (C-M-\). But if C-M-2 (or C-M-1) doesn't work, keyboard input may not be processed at all.

If the GUI is hung, as you suspect, you could ssh into your box from another computer and kill the X server process. I have sometimes had success with that. (If the other computer runs Windows, put Cygwin or putty on it.)
