Linux DNS - Windows clients problem
 

Good monring.
I have a problem wih the DNS at work. DNS was(is) based on Linux and network computers on Windows.
The old one crashed and we built a new one with RAD HAT 8.
I have installed samba, named and send mail.
The network computer ping both router and DNS server. DNS server also ping network computers and router.
Nslookup on net computers shows the DNS as nameserver but when i am trying to send/receive email via the DNS (mail server too), Outlook Express return host name and server not found. Even if i put the DNS ip adress directly as POP3 and SMTP server, Outlook returns the same message.
All net computers can see the DNS as Samba server at the Workgroup.
I need your help. Do i have to configure anything else?
Is it a Samba issue or Sendmail os named?

Please anybody with ideas please answer me.

Do you have pop3 service running on the server?

i am out of the office now and i can not check.
As far as i remember i have not started POP3 service.
I will do this first thing in the morning and wait for the results.
As i can understand, by the time that all computers recognize my the Linux computer as nameserver, it is not a Samba issue but a DNS service and network configuration issue.
Is it correct?

You sendmail via smtp and recieve via pop3. Go to your /etc/inetd.conf file and see if the pop3 line is uncommented. If it is not then uncomment and restart inted service. If it is and a portscan doesn't show pop3 service, then check to see if it is installed. If it is not install it. That should take care of it.

Forgot, make sure there are not firewalls running. Such as iptables or ipchains.
