linux compatible modems for laptops?

is there a list of linux-compatible modems for laptops? either external or pcmcia. by compatible, i mean 56k out of the box rather than having to download/compile special drivers (i.e. linuxant).

most distros have a hardware compatibility list, check their respective homepages

(I can tell you for sure that the Zoom 56k external serial modems work flawlessly out of the box with Linux - though they do need their own power source)

Also linmodem.org has a works/doesn't work modem list I think.
