linux cluster
Hai
I need to setup a linux cluster. So i googled and read few articles but got confused whether to go for openMosix or Oscar.I know both have really differant approachs to clustering but i need to know the pros and cons of both before starting the project.I need to setup a high performance cluster for scientific computations.

look into www.beowulf.org. I've become interested in clustering(though I don't have a real reason). The guide here( http://www.beowulf.org/overview/howto.html) is extremely helpful

linux clusters
Open Mosix ,OSCAR ,ROCKS give all the three are not very difficult to setup so try all these out and check ur self which one is appropriate for u
If you just want to learn about clusters, only need a cluster occasionally, or can't permanently install a cluster, you might consider one of the CD-ROM-based clusters
Several CD-ROM-based systems are available. You might look at ClusterKnoppix,
http://bofh.be/clusterknoppix/
or
Bootable Cluster CD (BCCD), http://bccd.cs.uni.edu/.

yes, that's true. MPI/LVM are ways of programming the thing you need in parallel. OpenMosix etc. need kernel patching.

I tried openMosix cause they are easy to install but there was no load sharing taking place. What could be the reasons??I tried to compile a program (consisting of large number of cpp files) by make (options -j 6 ie 6 process in parallel).I had only 2 machines in the cluster.

IIRC, you need to edit a config file (/etc/openmosix<something here> I think). This allows you to set up the machines that are networked together to be recongized by openMosix. Both machines have openMosix patched kernels right?

Yeah i had edited that config file and the kernel was also patched.I can see 2 processors by using command mosmon but there was no migration of process.

you look around a /proc/hpc/ dir. And get an config file for openmosix where u should specify and number like 1 or 0 for load sharing.U first type in google like
google:::
<how to load share in openmosix>
U will get bundle of think around ?

I also search for cluster software.
First I would like to install a cluster with about 5 Intel clients just for fun.
Finally I want to install a cluster with about 10 to 20 clients running oracle on it...would that work ?????
Which software can i use ??
OS is would like to use Suse Linux Enterprise Server 9.
Thanks....

Yes, you can install a cluster w/ 10-20 clients. I don't know very much about oracle(just that it's database). If it's pretty CPU intensive, and you want load balancing, then yes OpenMosix is the way to go. If it doesn't need CPU power, than making a cluster for Oracle would be pretty useless.
