Linux clients joining linux domains
Hi folks,

Can anyone give any pointers for setting up linux PDCs and joining linux clients / setting up user accounts? I've seen plenty of material on line about Samba - and joining windows clients but very little about whether you can you can do the same with linux?

Any info would be appreciated.

My clients are Ubuntu .. my server is a hacked NSLU2 :)

If you want central user management under Linux, you need to look into NIS (Network Information Server) that provides that, and NFS (Network File System) for sharing files. Google for both terms (nis & nfs) or look into for some howto's.

You could also use samba, but that does not make much sense, when you have both Linux clients and servers... (samba implements the Windows services under Linux).

you might wish to look more at LDAP these days over NIS. more complex, but similarily more powerful and more popular these days.

Hmm .. thanks for these answers. Just the kind of pointers I was looking for.

Interestingly openLDAP is already available as a package to download for the NSLU2 so that could be an option to explore. But the IT nerd in me will force me to read up on both options just so that I can be informed.

Thanks for your time.

[edit] .. already running NFS on the NSLU2 ;)
