Linux cannot connect to Windows xp PC
Probably this question has been asked many time before, but please help a linux newbie !
I have a windows xp laptop and a linux PC (running mandrake 9.2) connected to a siemens cable router (ethernet and not wireless) for sharing my cable connection and both can connect to the internet through it
I wanted to transfer some files between the machines. The problem is that windows can see samba shares on linux pc and also ftp to it, but the linux pc is not able to see the windows pc or its shared folders ..
I cannot even ping to the windows machine from the linux PC.
I have disabled all firewalls on both sides and tried, but still no luck.
What to try next ?

I tried with LinNeighbourhood, but I cannot see windows machine. The message log in LinNeighbourhood says something like "name_query failed to find .."
Then i tried to ping to the windows PC, but ping fails with no response.

If you can't ping, it's probably a network related issue
They both need to be ON the same network for instance my network is setup like so:
192.168.255.6 ip's are one octet off (these are not my real ip's by the way)
192.168.255.7 this is also a private network scheme
255.255.255.0 Subnet mask should be the same on all the computers
SABICAS workgroup should be the same on all the computers
Also. check your connections
The network scheme is the same in both operating systems, if you change an ip in Linux you need to change it in Windows.
Also, ping by ip.

Thanks for the replies.
The problem still exists. I tried checking all the IPs. It is assigned by the Router (DHCP) and still my windows pc can connect to the linux machine, but not the other way round !
workgroup name is the same in both machines and both have the same subnet mask
Btw how do I check the broadcast address in windows ?

I am also having this problem. We have a company LAN with several linux computers and several windows computers (Windows XP, 2000, 98, 95). All of the computers except one can ping each other and see SAMBA shares. One Windows XP computer suddenly stopped being able to respond to a ping or have its shares available to anyone else on the network. It can see other shares and ping other computers, but no other computers can ping it or see its shares. Its firewall is turned off, TCP/IP port filtering is off, we've reinstalled the network drivers, but nothing helps. The computer had been working fine until about a week ago when it failed to boot up. After we finally managed to bring it back up its never been the same. We had to reset several settings that got munged. We're not sure how to proceed from here. Any suggestions?
