Linux as Domain Controller in windows Enviroment?

Hi Guys,

My question is pretty simple, is it possible to run Linux as a Domain controller in an Active Directory environment(Windows 2000 server)?
I currently have a FC4 Machine running Samba on the network.
Any documents or links that i can use to read up will be hugely appreciated

Thanks in advance.

I'm sure it's possible, not entirely simple, but possible. I believe you can look into something called LDAP???

if you want to use the AD features you'll have to use Samba4, which is not yet stable. If you don't neded the AD, you can run samba 3.0.23, for example, as a PDC. This is my preferred samba guide:
www.samba.org/samba/docs/Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf
IMO, this is all you need.

that said, thanks for a great resource document This will come in very handy for the future.

samba 4 will be able to operate as a BDC for a NT PDC. (at least I think I've read this somewhere)
If you're brave, you check out the beta...

I'm actually reading up about that as we speak

Does anyone know when Samba-4 is due for release?

Acting as a Windows 2000 active directory domain controller (i.e., Kerberos and Active Directory). In point of fact, Samba-3 does have some Active Directory domain control ability that is at this time purely experimental. Active directory domain control is one of the features that is being developed in Samba-4, the next generation Samba release. At this time there are no plans to enable active directory domain control support during the Samba-3 series life-cycle.
This should be quite exciting to play with

I've had a go at this with Ubuntu Dapper and SuSE Linux Enterprise Edition. Managed to get both working as domain controllers, successfully logged a Win XP Pro box in (but not using AD). With Ubuntu, it was quite tricky, but there's plenty of documentation out there... As for SuSE - dead easy.. as easy as setting up a native Windows 2k / 2k3 server. This was all done purely as an experiment..

For your additional resources.. You may visit at this site linuxhomenetworking.com. I have successfully created a Samba NT4 PDC using fedora and able to join xp client onto that server...
