Linux as central account server

I was wondering if there was any way to set up a network of Linux PCs and have one PC store all user account info.

Sort of like the way Windows NT and 200x domains work. That way a local machine account wouldn't be needed to log in.

Something like this would be a huge time saver on large networks. I understand that Samba will work this way for Windows clients, but I'm looking to do this with Linux clients.

There are in fact two ways to do what your asking.

The first is LDAP (Active Directory is MSFT's implementation of LDAP) and the second is called NIS.
