I am trying to set up a linux server on a win2k network, If I use DHCP everything works fine .... except I can't give the machine a real name which messes up httpd and of course users would have to know the IP address of the machine in order to browse to it. When I set it up static, it sorta works. HTTPD works fine .... I make the dns entries manually and folks can browse to the server np . However comma other services won't work, i can't ftp or telnet to it from a win2k machine either by name or ip address, It seems the connection is made as far as tcpip goes and then something goes wrong and these processes just hang. What steps do I need to take during setup to make my linux box and microsuck network play nice together? Do i need samba ( I don't so much want to create shares on the machine ...ftp is fine...I just want it to communicate properly. NIS maybe?!? I dunno.!

Ok. I'm somewhat of a newbie myself, but I'm going to take a stab here...

First you most likely shouldn't need Samba, unless you are wanting to create microsuck-like shares and let microsuck-using users get at files on the linux box without needing FTP.

Second, was linux box working before you tried to set-up DHCP or is this the first you've tried to put it on the network?

Last, check-out xinetd or inetd and it's configuration. It's possible these aren't configured to know how to handle these other services or that they are specifically configured to disallow these services. Just my $0.02

Thanks for the info, but these services work perfectly if I set up the box using DHCP, the problem is that I want to use a static IP and when I do that, I am not able to connect using these methods, though the services are clearly running on the machine.

Okay.. a little clarification if you please... You are setting the Linux box up to perform certain services and those services work if you have the Linux box get its networking info from a DHCP server, but not if you have the Linux box set with static IP address. Is that correct?

If so, do you have another Linux box that you can telnet from as a test? That will tell you if the problem is with the box itself or something with the Win2k client attempting to make the connect.
If you don't have another box, when you are having trouble telneting from Win2K, can you telnet from a term window on the Linux box itself?

How many NICs in your Linux box?
What are you using for DNS?

I am using a win2k gateway and dns

I can telnet locally onto the machine as well as ftp

I do have another Linux box, however I am in the middle of rebuilding the box in question so I cannot try to telnet to it in that manner.

The install keeps crashing during the post install configuration phase ....new problem!! If I can get it back together, I will try to connect from my DHCP Linux box
