Linux & ADSL - what hardware?
 

I have an ADSL account and a SpeedTouch 330 :mad: modem which works fine with w's, but I can't get the bugger to work with Linux at all. There are drivers for the normal USB version but not the USB 330 version. The problem seems to be the USB interface. Linux not like that :tisk:

I am now considering buying a combined router/modem/switch and connect using a standard ethernet card. More tried and tested. Can anyone recommend a router/modem/switch combo that's proven to work well with Linux (SuSE distro)? I heard that the Netgear DG814 is good... has anyone got that one?

Have you tried going through the product's official documentation? According to the company's website, its fully supported in Linux.

Yes true, according to the website it is fully supported. I and others have tried for days to no avail. I've followed SuSE instructions at http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/configSpeedTouch.html and also the most popular HOWTO at http://linux-usb.sourceforge.net/SpeedTouch/howto.html
It works for the old Speedtouch USB but not the 330. Exlipse.co.uk say:
"From what we have been able to find out, at present the Alcatel 330 USB modem isn't yet supported under Linux. Alcatel have yet to release the drivers for this Operating System."

the best bet, like I have told every person that gets DSL and is planning to use Linux with it, GET AN ETHERNET DSL modem, it doesn't matter what modem you have, as long as it's Ethernet it WILL work with Linux. You can save so many headaches just by doing this that you will be truely greatful. Anyway, after you do this you just have to find out what kind of service you have, whether it is a PPPoE, and if it is just download Roaring Penguin to log in and gain access to your DSL connection. Voila!

Thanks zLinuxz. I though as much! I have 2 PCs at home, one with xp prf and one with linux. Unfortunately I need to use xp because I have to program in vb for work. What I may do is buy a router/switch/modem combo and connect both PCs to ADSL using Ethernet. Currently I use PPPoA. Does the protocol depend on the Service Provider or does it depend on the type of modem? If I have to use PPPoA will that work with an Ethernet modem?

I got a greatspeed router that connects to eth.Works like a charm.All I need is a dhcp client on my box and that's it.

hey, yeah the protocol depends on the ISP. yeah PPPoA works with ethernet, that is not a problem. I think that the difference between PPPoA and PPPoE is that you require login for PPPoE but not for PPPoA. In PPPoA I believe it just matches the MAC address of your modem. :)

cheers for the help. i bought an ethernet dsl modem/router today, the alcatel speedtouch 510. i will enjoy playing around with it at the weekend and hopefully my next post to linuxquestions.org will be through linux and mozilla! at last I can use xp less and linux more.

well, I'm a Netscape boy, hehehe. I'm using Netscape 7.0 and I love it :D

it's really nice looking, very intuitive, it's as fast as the fastest of all the browsers. So I just choose this one. :)
I've used mozilla, galeon, konqueror, opera...
and since I have a fast computer and enough ram, I can use Netscape as a luxury, since it is quite bigger than most of the other browsers and takes up more resources. :)

zLinuxz, you seem like a bit of an expert in matters Linux so I'll be a bit cheeky and ask one more question if I may!
What is the best way of setting up a home network with one Linux box and one xp.
I currently have one IP address and have activated NAT on my router/modem. Both boxes are connected to the router using one ethernet card for each box. At the moment I can ping my linux box from xp using its internat IP address but not the other way round.
Is this the right way to go?
Another thought I had was to put another Ethernet card in my linux box and use it as the server. It would be connected to the router and the xp machine. Does this sound feasable and if yes, how would I set my linux box up? i guess the gateway for my linux box would be the router IP, and on my xp box the gateway would be my linux IP?? would I need to set up a domain or would it work without one?

oh, don't flatter me...really I am no Linux expert. I can only help you with I so far know.
On the new question that you have.
Well, I have a friend that is somewhat similar to you in his setup. And here it is what works for him. He has his Main computer to which the USB modem is connected directly to. I suggest you choose a main computer from the Two, in which you will put 2 ethernet cards. Then you will connect your DSL modem to one of the cards, and the other card you will connect to your Hub. The second copmuter you will plug into the hub in slot #2.
Then, on the second computer you assing the Gateway ip address to what your main's computer ip is, and if I'm not wrong, that should work.
Note:your second's computer internet will be slower than your main computer's internet.

I would also suggest to make Linux your primary computer and then use XP as your secondary computer.
