The scenario:

- ADSL on Linux by USB;
- Win XP on laptop by crossover cable (working fine)
- Mac Os X on Power Book G4 with direct cable (Not working)

I Have set IP Adress:
Linux: 192.168.0.1
Win XP: 192.168.0.2
Mac Os X: 192.168.0.3

Why is this not working?

I Have a Box running RedHat 9 that is connected fine to the internet over ADSL. This Box has 2 network cards. eth0 is connected to winxp, that still works fine, and another (eth1) that is not reconigzed in the Unix Server (RH9). I want to plug another notebook (powerbook G4) to this network card. I found already that the kernel isn't compiled for supporting this last network card in the Linux Box. What I need is to connect from the powerbook to the linux.

Probably the architecture:

Linux ADSL:
eth0 - 192.168.0.1 - crossover cable (working)
eth1 - 10.0.0.1 - direct cable (not detectable by redhat-config-network)

NoteBook Win XP:
Xircom - 192.168.0.2 - crossover cable (working)

PowerBook G4 Mac OS X:
Built-in Ethernet - 10.0.0.2 - direct cable (not working)

The Linux box makes the routing/firewaling.

you need to use crossover to connect two systems direct, i believe this also holds true for pc to mac, that should be your first step..

That is not interly (?!) true. I am using now the direct cable over the eth0 to my PowerBook... the problem remains on the eth1.

It sounds like your routing to me. I would simply put a hub on eth0 and connect both computers to it.


It is technically correct that a crossover cable should be used for "like" devices, but many NICs and network devices can now auto detect and correct for using the wrong cable types... so it's not much of an issue.
