how do you find the netbios name?

smbd restart didn't restart samba I don't think, so I went to /etc/rc.d/ and did an ./rc.samba restart and I can now mount the memorized shares using LinNeighborhood, but still can't browse..

netbios name for samba is whatever you choose it to be. in windows it's called machine name, w/samba you want to choose a netbios name and put that in your smb.conf as i posted earlier. i guess to make things easier, you could call it floods91, for your box running slack 9.1. my machine/netbios names usually come from the boxes os, i.e. djslk91, djwin2k,djrh90, for dj slack 9.1, dj windows 2000, dj redhat 9.0. hope that makes sense, just choose a name and add the line previously posted. lets see if the network and lin neighborhoods can find what they are looking for.

p.s. sure you checked the firewall, lol.

lol.. made sure to check the firewall. It's disabled right now to be sure.

I let LinNeighborhood run for longer so I could get more messages.. here goes!

Code:
root@floods[box]:/home/floods# LinNeighborhood
read_socket_with_timeout: timeout read. read error = Connection reset by peer.
read_socket_with_timeout: timeout read. read error = Connection reset by peer.
read_socket_with_timeout: timeout read. read error = Connection reset by peer.
lp_load: refreshing parameters
Initialising global parameters
params.c:pm_process() - Processing configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf"
Processing section "[global]"
added interface ip=192.168.0.54 bcast=192.168.0.255 nmask=255.255.255.0
Client started (version 3.0.4).
Connecting to 192.168.0.1 at port 139
Doing spnego session setup (blob length=16)
server didn't supply a full spnego negprot
Got challenge flags:
Got NTLMSSP neg_flags=0x608a0215
NTLMSSP: Set final flags:
Got NTLMSSP neg_flags=0x60080215
NTLMSSP Sign/Seal - Initialising with flags:
Got NTLMSSP neg_flags=0x60080215
SPNEGO login failed: NT_STATUS_REQUEST_NOT_ACCEPTED
The first three, read_sock_with_timeout:, are when I just start it up and it's looking for the machines. I then used ADD and added the XP machine, with correct workgroup and IP. That's when I get the other messages.

took another look at your smb.conf, you may want to add under global

security = SHARE
encrypt passwords = Yes

i've posted my smb.conf file here or parts of it several times. it works from network neighborhood, i don't use linneighborhood, but i believe it would work w/that as well. remember to restart samba after any changes. you may have to restart the windows machine after changes as well.

Well, after a lot of tinkering and not being sure what worked, LinNeighborhood can now browse, though when I go to mount one of the drives I get an error message saying cannot resolve address. any ideas on that?

eh, I think LinNeighborhood is just broke. Not by me, but it was just never really finished. It's not working again and I haven't done anything..! I'll see if I can find a .tgz for it and install it on slack, but who knows.

yeah, but that ftp server isn't up. I found it eventually and it hasn't helped. I'll just have to mount using mount -t smbfs -o username=,password= //HOST/SHARE /mnt/HOST/SHARE

long and irritating but oh well
