Linksys BEFW11S4 without DSL possible (?)
Hi
....(to put it short for those who don't want to read too much: is it possible/good idea to use this hardware connected to my linux box with internet connection enabled? - i have got it sort of working mind you)......
I managed to purchase a Linksys BEFW11S4 the other day (wireless access point + 4 port router), well knowing that I don't have a DSL connection at home. I bought it so that i could just experiment with it as an AP only without access to the outside world.
Anyway, I do have analog (derr..) 56K modem in a linux mandrake 9.1 box which is able to do PPP to my ISP. So i get a dynamic IP for a short time. I set up internet connection sharing using the wizard on my linux box. I then connected the linksys router to the linux box with "get automatic settings". It seems to work!!
Has anyone done this as well? I think I just got this working by fluke, but would like to understand what is going on. Eg. I think I'm connecting a router to a router basically. Fropm the linksys router's point of view, the WAN is just another RJ45 connection to whatever and it doesn't have to be a DSL line at all. It could simply be another linux box which just happens to connect to The Internet via PPP.
If I had a DSL line, i wouldn't need my linux box in the middle between the linksys router and my ISP. Correct ?
Any ideas/comments?
Cheers
G.
