Hi all. been with LM since 4 now on 17, I never realy understood terms like Host name or ssid and the like. I was working ok with LM 17 Mate when the network faild maybe i altered something or whatever. whilst trying to get network back (using Wicd) only made it worse. so reinstalled LM 17 Qiana on another partition and everthing works ok. Q1. is there a file in Qiana i can use to over wright the corrupt one in Mate? Q2. can someone direct me to tutorial on basic network terms so if I have probs in the future I wont have to reinstall Mint?
I have some suggestions: Run these commands from a terminal (you may have to use sudo) and post their output here. For readability, please surround each item with "code" tags, which become available when you click the "Go Advanced" button to the right of the "Quick Reply" button beneath the compose message window.
However, I doubt it's what you are looking for, because it's about how networking works , not about how to troubleshoot a network connection on a Linux machine.
I think this is more relevant to your needs. It is about configuring and troubleshooting a network connection on a Ubuntu machine; as Mint is based on Ubuntu, I think you will find it useful.
frankbell, thanks for response, i have forgoten how to post the output of a file to the forum, but comparing the 2 screenshots the difference is Mate has no "ppp0" section in ifconfig, in wlan0 2 lines missing from mate, inet addr and inet6 addr before line "up Broadcast" etc.
Could someone post instructions on howto post file contents to the forum, thanks
The easiest way to post the output from a terminal command is to click the "Go Advanced" button at the bottom of the Compose/Reply window. Once you "go advanced," at the point in your post at which you wish to place the output of your commands, past it in, highlight it, then surround it with "code" tags.
Code tags are indicated on the menu bar by a number sign (pound sign, hash mark, octothorpe, #, depending on where you are from).
You can also insert them manually; once you see them in your draft, you will see what to type.
Hi frankbell below is the good one Qiana, because the Mate version does not have a network connection I can not find a way to post the ifconfig file. comparing them, Mate does not have ppp0 section or the inet and inet6 address line in wlan0
I thank you for your time and the links to the tutorials, I was persuing the problem to learn more about how to fix a network instead of reinstalling the OS.thanks for your contribution.
