laptop network card

I'm trying to add a laptop to the network (Toshiba Satellite), but with no luck.
First, windows was installed , I tried to configure this network card.. but when I try to ping other computers in the network, I get 97% of packets loss, e.g a lot of packets are not received.
I tried then to run a live cd (morphix), and after I configured the card using ifconfig, I get the exact same error that I got in Windows.
Here's the line that relates about the ethernet card when I execute lspci :
Quote:
0000:01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp. 82801BD PRO/100 VE (MOB) Ethernet Controller (rev 83)
Also, when I try to use DHCP to configure the ethernet card, it prints :
Quote:
Sending DHCP broadcast from eth0 . Operation Failed.
Is my network card not functional, or what's wrong ?

Thanks in advance.

Re: laptop network card

I'm not familiar with this laptop, so here are a few general hints:

A quick google search showed that the ethernet controller should run with the e100 module. Check with lsmod if the module has indeed been loaded.
It seems the card is running somehow - how would you explain the 3% of packets that are not lost.

I guess you mean the packet loss. You might use DMESG or check the logs, to see if there are additional error messages, which might give you a hint.

Trying to start the DHCP client on such a brittle connection will not magically heal it.

And the fact that two different operating systems show the same error pattern does suggest a hardware defect. This may be a defective router, or a bad cable, connector contact problems, and yes, the ethernet assembly might be damaged as well.
