Lan subnet and mac addresses firewall

Hi,

I have a ftp server running for my lan.
But I have some problems with the firewall:

I filter the connections using mac addresses, that's a secure way to do it imo.
This seems to work for people within my lan subnet but not for the people of another subnet.
Why can't I see their mac addresses? And what do I have to do to make it possible?

Thanks!

Why can't i see mac addresses of different subnet ?
Just because a router forwards it's own mac for cross subnet communications. And for all those packets you'll only be seeing a entry of your own ROUTER in your ARP cache.
