LAN email with no domain name

I've got a small LAN (4 systems) of Linux boxes. I want to setup a system of having them email all their system logs to my desktop system, where I can read them collected in one place. All have /etc/hosts files set up for the entire LAN. However, I have no domain name for the LAN (which is actually behid a NAT router that connects to another LAN), so the i keep getting domain name errors. Is there a way to 'trick' sendmail into understanding where to send them? A private dns server for the LAN that gives a domain name maybe? Or hopefully something simpler?

Ok i've set up /etc/hosts on all my machines with entries of the form

192.168.1.1 wall.slacklastname.net wall
192.168.1.2 sql.slacklastname.net sql

This allows me to send email from one user to another on the same system. However, if i try send a message from root@sql to root@wall, nothing gets through. The send mail process on the recieving machine (in output from ps axu) registers that a message was recieved, but if i run pine, no message shows up in the mailbox.
