Hallo,
i'm trying to setup a LAMP but i'm new to Linux so i really get
some problems. I downloaded ubuntu-6.10-server-i386.iso and the
installation was fine. It recognised the two NICs, same model
realtec 8139 base cards, but i'm not sure if they run correctly.
With ping they work, locally.
Right now there is this computer running linux and an ethernet
switch.
First question
==============
the light on the switch blicks continuously but
there is no traffic. Is this normal or i have to think that
the NICs are not installed correctly?
Second question
===============
if i connect a laptop running win2k and i try to connect to
the LAMP server via ftp the connection is unstable, or better,
is more dead then alive: i'm asked for the login but then
the connection is close by the server. The fact the the laptop
is running win2k shouldn't create problems to ftp or http
connections if on the other side there is linux, is this correct?
If i ping the LAMP server from the laptop i cannot see him.
So my first problem is to understand if the NICs works fine or
if i have to update the driver.
Any suggestion?
Thanks for your attention and sorry for my poor english.
The computer right now is at home: my project is to prepare the server
and then to insert it in a existing LAN. I want to setup a LAMP with a fax server and
an e-mail server, no X.
So, for the ifconfig output you have to wait a few hours when i'll go home.
I remember that for eth0 the IP address is 192.168.123.3, subnet mask 255.255.255.0
and for eth1 192.168.123.4, same subnet. There is also the BROADCAST 192.168.123.255
(Do i need it?).
I didn't update the ubuntu server because the two NICs where already installed, but i
can try it.
There is no firewall.
My laptop: 192.168.123.12 - 255.255.255.0
If i ping my laptop from server console the ping works but not continuosly.
It writes one line then wait a few seconds, then
write one or two lines, then wait a few seconds again, and so on.
I'll sendo you a ping page.
There is another thing, may be it's important: i indicated a gateway that is not
still present in the LAN (192.168.123.100) but it will be. I will use it to send
emails from LAN to WAN and to download emails from an external email server.
There is no internet connection for the server just yet right? So all you want is to establish is a frim connection between your server (123.4) and your laptop (123.12)? Both machines are connected to a switch I presume? Have you checked you cables? No bad cabling, loose connections?
Resolved! There was a IRQ conflict at BIOS level. So ubuntu recognized correctly the two
NICs, the problem was elsewhere. The drivers 8139too and 8139cp are the right ones.
Thanks crazyivan for your suggestions.
