lab build help please
Hello all. I am in need of some help. About 6 years ago i purchased some cbt (computer based training) software from the following website
http://www.linuxcbt.com/ for my RHCT course at the local community college. The school had a pre built lab using vmware player/workstation. Since this as 6 years ago, i have no idea what the lab setup consisted of. I do not know if it had cisco equipment in it but i doubt it since vmplayer was knew and immulating cisco then was almost impossible. I want to set up a lab so i can use my software cbt again. I have tried to contact the company and see if they can help me out but no contact. I have no idea what is required to have in the lab setup for this course. When i purchased it, the cbt instructor assumes you have a lab to use, or at least i think thats true. haha thanks EDIT. Oh, btw, 6 years ago, the cloud (sorta speak) hardly exsisted. it was all purchase and they send you the dvds or you download them. haha |
Check your DVDs and see if they play ok.
As far as a lab, I would get a KVM switch and then set up at least one machine as a server and one as a client to play with. I would run Centos and go for it. |

it is 6 years out of date and is for the last generation of computers the current RHEL is RHEL 6.3 with 6.4 do soon 6 years ago RHEL 4.5 was released Centos no longer is supporting any of the 4 series ( though red hat is on an EXTRA extended life support ) |

i could still use rhel 6.3 and still be able to review old material. most of the documentation at TLDP are still being used and they were written back in 2004 (some of them) thanks guys |
If you want to setup a inexpensive lab consisting of routed networks and services, then go download yourself a copy of Vyatta Core http://www.vyatta.org/which is Debian Linux with various open-source networking software with a great CLI on top.
Run everything inside a VMware ESXi hypervisor (also free), and you can install multiple router VMs providing routing between virtual-switches, CentOS/RHEL hosts in local/remote networks (vswitches), even simulate network latency/packet loss over the virtual WANs if you install tc (have to add the Debian repos inside Vyatta) in the Vyatta routers. You'll need at least 8GB (16GB would be better) to set it up, but it'll be a great 'lab in a laptop'. |
