kubuntu-vista laptops sharing pcmcia internet, possible?
 

If I understand this correctly, you want to connect over WiFi with the Kubuntu machine, and then share that out to the Vista one? How will the Vista machine connect to the Kubuntu machine? You will need a way to connect them other than the WiFi card in the Kubuntu machine, as that will be connected to the AP.

Can you connect the two laptops via cross over Ethernet? Or do you have an intervening switch and some patch cables?

Well its not wifi, but a PC card offering an internet connection through smart antennas, I have linked iburst

I have a dual boot Kubuntu/XP, so I connected Vista machine with the other machine on the XP partition via ad hoc.
I thought if it would be possible to do the same with Kubuntu.

So it wouldn't be possible to run 2 wireless devices, wlan and iburst PC card, simultaneously?
as with the Vista/XP link.


My efforts were to connect wirelessly cause I dont have any of the above, I am sure I can get a hold of some if need be, I will need definitions and specs please.

OK, I see. I misunderstood the source of the Internet connection, that changes things.

So if you have this iBurst PCMCIA card in the Kubuntu laptop, and then in addition to that have a WiFi card in the Kubuntu laptop (dual PCMCIA slots), then you could create an Ad-Hoc network with the WiFi card, and share out your connection from the iBurst.

I thought that you were trying to connect to a WiFi network and share it back out to the other laptop at the same time with just one WiFi card, which you couldn't do.

Is this an accurate description of your setup? This would not be hard to setup if that is what you want, though you will need to watch out for your WiFi card drivers. Not all of them support Ad-Hoc or Master modes, which would be a problem as you need one of those modes to connect the other laptop.

Ad-Hoc support is pretty widespread in all of the Linux WiFi drivers, but you may need to keep it in mind. For example, I have an RT8180 card, and the drivers don't guarantee that Ad-Hoc mode actually works, as it is more or less untested.

I dont have a WiFi card or extra slot either. Would it work without a WiFi card? if not, is there one that is a usb connection.

I went out and bought a crossover Ethernet cable so as to save time while figuring out how to connect wirelessly, I am having a hard time configuring and linking the 2 laptops, any ideas?

Well when you connect the two laptops together with the cross over Ethernet cable, you will be establishing a direct connection between the two machines. But you need to setup TCP/IP settings for them before they will actually be able to see each other over the line.

The easiest way would be to setup a static IP for each laptop. Say 192.168.1.1 for the Kubuntu machine, and 192.168.1.2 for the Vista machine. Once they have IPs, you should be able to share out your connection from the iBurst card with no problem.

As for how to do that, this guide for Ubuntu should help. You should have no problem following it on Kubuntu, since it is all low level stuff where Ubuntu and Kubuntu are identical.
