kppp/pppd error not letting me log on to Internet
good morning folks. i am having trouble with pppd connecting me to the internet using the MEPIS live cd (2004.6). i am testing a machine to see if it will run mepis. it did well with the ethernet connection, but my friend only has dial-up right now. i've booted in both kernels and tried to log in as both a user and then su with no success. i have a Diamond supra express external serial modem. mepis sees the modem, and the modem query comes out okay. I don't think the problem is with mepis in particular. it seems like kppp and pppd are not working together properly. here's what happens:
start kppp hit connect [login script] -->ATZ -->OK -->ATMOLO -->OK -->ATDT5313000 -->CONNECT 115200 (bottom of script window) "starting pppd" ERROR "Timeout has expired while waiting for the PPPD interface to come up. PPPD ERROR LOG can not open any of the following files /var/log/syslog.ppp /var/log/syslog /var/log/messages THIS IS VERY FRUSTRATING!!! I bought an external modem because all the mepis forums and the 'point and click linux' book about mepis say external modems should ALWAYS work with MEPIS and any other linux distro. can anyone help with this problem? |
i too used to get such kind of errors
at that time my ppp package was not fine either u need to reinsatlj the ppp packages or reinstall the system if nothing works regards |
I just replied to a similar thread and some of my suggestions may help, check it out

I think you guys haven't noticed it's a live cd, don't get much chance to change what's burned onto the disc, eh..
I'm interested in the fact pppd says it can't access files that only syslog is supposed to write to. Check to make sure the syslog daemon is running with ps aux and also do ls -l /var/log/syslog.ppp and the other 2 logfiles to make sure they exist. Do you have a link to the cd iso please? It would help to see it running.. |
ohh!!
i haven't worked on mepis so i did not know about it thought that i was just another linux oh hdd regards |
Hi,
Your running a live CD, it appears to be trying to write to log files. This is a problem you may not be able to get around. So long as it can't write to these log files (which it never will) it probably wont work. Just my two cents. |
