Can you browse using IP addresses or is it completely "down"? Just checking..use some other pc to find out an ip address to Google or some site that's not down all day, and try to connect to that ip (ping it). If it works, it's still a DNS problem, but if it doesn't (that's what I guess), you're not actually connected or something has gone wrong.

In my opinion wvdial works better than these graphical ppp-dialer-apps, but it's a bit robust yes. What was your problem with wvdial? Does your modem have a sound when you dial? Did you try to start kppp from console, or use the information window of it, to see what's going on? Can you use somekind of a network traffic analyser (just a simple one, like an applet to a panel) to determine if packets go out or come in at all?

yea I think its DNS but.....

Hi,

I do also think that this is a DNS problem what I did that I just put a IP address instead of the web address but still I din't get any thing. then started thinking that may be even its not a DNS problem. I really don't what it is because I do get connect and my system gets a IP address from the remote server. and I do ifconfig -a I do see that i am connected.

okay what was with wvdial that when I dial it modem sounds a long beep and on the log it shows that its waiting for CARRIER and after that its hangs up. I tried also some tips from the friends but none worked. really don't know what it is. I think that I should be reading how ppp works then I think that I should get to some sloution.

thanks

I'm having a similar problem with kppp. I can dial up and connect, but I can't get name resolution. I'm put in the IP address for one site I know and was able to connect and surf using their links.

I've tried specifying the DNS domain, but I get the same result. Am I going to have to get my ISP's DNS server IP address to get it to work, or am I doing something else wrong?
