-Currently- I'm on XP Pro logging onto the internet via my LAN, the server of which is running Home and dialing the net. I'm about to give Knoppix a try (as soon as the ISO finishes burning here) and was hoping to get some insight ahead of time as to how hard it will be to get my comp on Knop to still log onto the net via the other comp. I've seen several articles about Samba, but none in reference to XP, so I wanted to ask and make sure it worked with it, too. Also any other tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks ahead of time.
If your server with Home is serving out IP addresses through DHCP, then Knoppix won't have any trouble getting online on your Pro box (provided it can autoconfigure your network card, but this should work fine.) since it will autodetect the network at boot and configure it for you so you can get online immediately.
Also Samba is pretty easy on Knoppix, when you're booted up have a look at the little Penguin button on the taskbar, clicking on that gives you a menu under which you can find the Samba server. Knoppix will ask you whether or not to share all drives and home directories and off you go, whatever you share will be available on the Windows network as well.
