Angry Kinternet troubles!

I just started using Suse 8.0. When I try and dial up the internet, the modem dials fine, but when it comes to the handshake w/my ISP, I get the following in my Kinternet log:

Please ignore the "no dial tone" entries, I was testing it out. I also applied the following advice from Suse support but it didn't help:

Modem Dial-in with a Manually Configured ISP
Deutsch
Email address:
Support knowledgebase (thallma_modem_stupid80)
Applies to
SuSE Linux: Version 8.0

Symptom:
You want to connect to the Internet via an analog modem or an ISDN
terminal adapter through an ISP you have manually configured. However, you
encounter some problems when logging in to your provider.
Cause:
The dial-in mechanism tries to detect a terminal login and fails. This is
shown, among others, by the following line in the "kinternet protocol":
0 pppd: --> Don't know what to do! Starting pppd and hoping for the best.
Solution:
Please proceed as follows to avoid the terminal login:
Open a console.
Enter the command "su -".
Change to the directory /etc/sysconfig/network/providers.
Open the provider file in this directory with an ascii editor of your
choice.
Insert the line:
STUPIDMODE="yes"
Save the changes.
Now your dial-in connection should work.

Thank you in advance for your help. I am pretty new to linux w/ a basic understanding, so go easy on the instructions. I did manage to get connected to the internet in Suse 7.3. It seems the problem lies in "all had bit 7 set to 0". I don't know where to correct this.
