Question Kali TP-Link TP-WN881ND wifi adapter experience question

So I'm trying to choose a wifi adapter for Kali that can do monitor mode and packet injection. I'm still learning so I don't know which works or not but based on what I've researched myself and what's available for me to buy, I'm choosing between a TP-Link TP-WN722N and TP-WN881ND. Because the V2 is the latest of WN722N and it does't work on Kali I'm leaning towards getting the WN881ND. Now, I can only buy 1 cheap adapter coz I'm saving up for other hardware so I want to ask you guys first about your experience on using a TP-Link TP-WN881ND adapter. Does it work? does monitor mode and packet injection on Kali work?

If not, can you recommend me a TP-Link adapter. TP-Link is pretty much the only brand available that I can buy here in my place. Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum

From what I see here and here, I would agree the WN881ND is a much better choice. The ath9k driver supports the functionality you're looking for (monitor mode and packet injection) and the WN881ND uses this driver.

Regards...

Thank you for replying . I've been waiting for so long for a reply. That's the exact site I've based my decision on getting TP-WN881ND. If a chipset is listed as supported on that site, does it mean it will work on Kali?

Since the ath9k driver is completely open source and has been around for quite some time now, I strongly suspect that it will. Although I wasn't able to find a list of supported chips in Kali, I did see other evidence that leads me to that conclusion...

https://forums.kali.org/showthread.p...th9k-(-driver-)

https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/...Enabling_ath9k (WN881ND's chip is listed.)

http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Dr...9k/__v117.html (Older page that did not list your chip, as it probably wasn't being manufactured at that time.)

Quote:
Any distribution shipping a kernel >= 2.6.27 will have ath9k present.
Kali's current rolling release is using kernel 4.9. However, if you want to be absolutely sure, you can ask someone at the Kali forums or by using IRC.

Let us know how it turns out.

Regards...

Hello again . So I bought TL-WN881ND today and have been testing it out. Works perfectly with monitor and packet injection for deauth. Though, the signal's kinda weak. My Samsung phone receives better signal. Now I have another question, I get the handshake that I need but somehow can't penetrate the connection. I've used aircrack-ng and hashcat with rockyou.txt but it failed. What would you advice for me to do?

Hi...

I have no idea, perhaps another member who has experience in this area can comment or you can ask this question in Kali's forums.

Regards...
