Joining XP Pro SP2 to Samba domain PDC

I am having a permanent problem joining freshly installed WinXP SP2 Pro workstations to an otherwise properly functioning office LAN with a Mandrake 9.2-based Samba 3.0.4 PDC.

At the moment, there are only Win98SE workstations that can access Samba shares in workgroup mode and the same is also possible using the WinXP boxes.

However, when I try to join the domain in WinXP, it all goes through the steps (new user name+pw+domain, machine name+domain, Samba root+pw+domain), then proceeds to allow to add user and specify type, but when it would actually get executed, it produces the following error:

The trust relationship between this workstation and the primary domain failed.

I have been searching the net for that error linked to Samba and ended up with the recent Samba release note (v3.0.20) where it says that version 3.0.12 fixed this type of error. Could you pls confirm that, so that the upgrade would really eliminate the above problem.

In addition, could you suggest any site/doc/manual to allow a systematic, step-by-step investigation on how to fix problems related to joining XP to a Samba domain? (Unfortunately, I have been fighting with it for several months and checked out various forums and several sites, including Samba's to find anything that could help.)

Thanks,

Les

Hi Oscar,

you can find 3 log files below (GBMK-01.LOG, 192.168.3.25.LOG and NMBD.LOG). Due to the size of GBMK-01.LOG being about 38k, I had to split my post.)

Domain name is GBMK, PC name with XP SP2 to join is GBMK-01 with IP address 192.168.3.25. Samba's NetBios name is PDCOFGBMK with IP address 192.168.3.2. Test period is between 10:39-10:48 today with the steps outlined in my original message.

GBMK-01.LOG:

I think you would have to put it on an independent server. Even if "Attachments" were allowed, they would appear in the body of the post.

LES,

Here's our working smb.conf this might help troubleshoot yours...

# Global parameters
[global]
log file = /var/log/samba/log.%I
load printers = No
add group script = /usr/sbin/groupadd %g
delete group script = /usr/sbin/groupdel %g
socket options = TCP_NODELAY SO_SNDBUF=8192 SO_RCVBUF=8192
logon drive = P:
username map = /et/c/samba/smbusers
delete user from group script = /usr/sbin/deluser %u %g
interfaces = 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 127.0.0.1/255.255.255.0
domain master = Yes
wins proxy = Yes
passdb backend = tdbsam
wins support = true
netbios name = bigone
netbios aliases = ourlabsvr1
server string = OURLAB.NET Authentication Server
logon script = netlogon.bat
logon path = /home/samba/netlogon
workgroup = OURLAB.NET
os level = 65
add user script = /usr/sbin/useradd %u
security = user
add machine script = /usr/sbin/useradd -g machines -c Machine -d /dev/null -s /bin/false %u
max log size = 50
delete user script = /usr/sbin/userdel %u
domain logons = Yes

[homes]
comment = Home Directories
valid users = %S
read only = No
create mask = 0600
directory mask = 0700
browseable = No

[netlogon]
comment = Network Logon Service
path = /home/samba/netlogon
guest ok = Yes
share modes = No

[Profiles]
path = /usr/local/samba/profiles
browseable = No
share modes = No

[printers]
comment = All Printers
path = /var/spool/samba
printable = Yes
browseable = No

-----------
Notes: When we first try to join in the domain we were not able to join at first, here are the things that we found.

1. in the line:
add machine script = usr/sbin/useradd -g machines -c Machine -d /dev/null -s /bin/false %u
take note of -g <--- it's a small g. we corrected from it was G.
2. We created a group called machines

after we made those corrections, everything works.

have a nice day,

Oscar

Les,

"Dieing" to know if it worked.

Oscar,

Is there a typo in "username map = /et/c/samba/smbusers"?
Shouldn't that be "username map = /etc/samba/smbusers"?

Is ourlab.net (65.105.181.66) really your domain name / IP address?

Both,

I wonder if the split post -- cluttered thread problem could be fixed by putting long files in the wiki? Would it be allowed, could they be protected from tampering?

I have been following this w/ interest, hope this isn't too off topic.

Hi Oscar (and Rick),

Thanks for the contributions. Maybe I give some more background details in order to see why I am so puzzled.

Since the office LAN is a production environment, when I first ran into an earlier problem back in June (XP could not find the domain, saying 'domain does not exist or cannot be connected'), I put together a test environment with the same Mandrake 9.2 and the included Samba 2.x on the CD that I immediately upgraded to the then downloadable v3.0.10. After a few attempts I could successfully join all types of Windows clients (win2k, xp) to the test Samba server, so I thought it will be straightforward to apply the same changes to 'smb.conf' on the production site and the problem will get solved. I also reached the conclusion of having to create the 'machine' account if it did not exist (also learnt from several, otherwise very useful guides on Samba), and that the Unix user must exist prior to joining the domain with him. In fact, during the join procedure, Samba creates the XP machine account if it was missing, i.e. XP and Samba effectively communicate.

So you can imagine my surprise when the original Samba server (with the changes applied) refused XP to join and produced the error of failed trust relationship. Therefore, I do think that I have a working 'smb.conf', but I miss the tools to investigate the root cause of the difference in the behavior between the production and test sites. When I saw the Samba release note yesterday, I thought maybe this could account for it (production site, Samba v3.0.4 vs test site v3.0.10) and hence my primary question.

Have a nice day,

Les

Oscar,

This points out the need for official reserved local domain names.

I use ".lan" and I think that ".*an" should be officially reserved for local use, same as "10." etc.

Now back to Samba, I doubt I can contribute to the solution; but I will follow w/ interest.

hehe that would be a good idea!

to Les:

i tried googling about the problem it seems i could not find any solution for your problem.

have you tried turning on or off the client ntlmv2 auth = no/yes?

how i wish i could help but i am out of idea, anyway i will still take note this problem cause i will be installing more samba servers, i might encounter one.

have a nice day.

dot LAN, dot WAN, dot MAN, etc.

Just remember you heard it here first.

When IANA or whoever implements this, I want credit for originating the idea.

BTW, is this worth a slashdot post?
