JDS - Networking issue

Hi,
As always you see the first sentece is same and that I am new to linux/ unix platforms. I am trying to install JDS and I have a problem in conecting the internet though my router.

First few words on my setup.
I have a pentium 4-1.4 GHz, desktop with onboard sound and lan (Chip VIA) and 512 MB RAM and one each of CDRW and CD/DVDRW.

Also, I have a laptop DELL 600M P4- 1.6GHz Mobile processor with 256 MB RAM and a MINIPCI wireless card.

I have a cable connection from ADelphia and a modem given by them which is Terayon TJ715 cable modem. and recently added a Netgear wireless 802.x B/G router and a USB wireless network adapter for the desktop. and the wireless setup works fine with NO issues. I am using no security settings under router, but assigned fixed IPs based on MAC addresses for laptop wireless, PC network card (VIA) and to USB Wireless network adapter currently attached to the PC (and under windows, I could remove my network cable or the USB adapter on the PC and still can log into the internet by just restarting the computer .. JUST to suggest that both are working), so I can configure the two computers easily and to forward the ports as necessary.

local IP Addresses are assigned as below
Laptop wireless card : 192.168.1.3
USB adapter (on PC) : 192.168.1.2
PC Lan (VIA) : 192.168.1.4

Other router settings are as below
LAN TCP/IP setup
IP Address 192.162.1.1
IP Subnet mask 255.255.255.0 (Class C)
RIP direction None
RIP version Diabled

Use router as DHCP server
Starting IP address 192.168.1.2
Ending IP address 192.168.1.51

Internet IP address (external)and Domain Name Server (DNS) Address are checked to get automatically from ISP (Adelphia Cable)

I am using windows 2000 service pack 3 on my desktop and windows Xp professional service pack 2 on my laptop and this setup works with NO ISSUES AT ALL.

Now "ipconfig/all" command output from my laptop command prompt is as below:

All the above details are for your information, now the problems with my network setup and configuration on JDS is as below.

ifconfig -a command output gives me these details.

cat etc/hosts output is as below

192.168.1.4 linux.local linux #THIS LINE IS MANUALLY ADDED BY ME#

cat /etc/resolv.conf output is as below
nameserver 192.168.1.1
search local

output of hostname is as below
linux

as the MAC address is correct I believe that my card is identified by the system (JDS) and I see the VIA-Rhine module loaded under lsmod
Also, I am sure my cables are ok as I did not change anything and the system works fine when I boot the computer under windows 2000.

I am currently hooked up through the same router on my laptop and the ipconfig/all putput above shoudl give you an idea of my setup.

Please ask for any more information you may need abotu my hardware/ software or settings and I will try to respond at my earliest convinience.

I appreciate if anybody can help me out setting up this network. Just for your information, if I connect the modem using the USB Cable directly with out router and login using Knoppix Live CD, it connects to the internet. But that way, as I had to bypass the router, i can not connect my laptop. :(

Also, I tried Debian today and to my surprise it also has the same issue. Could not ping the router. It can only ping the BROADCAST address I gave in the static IP setup, ie 192.168.1.255

Even if somebody can guide me to set up the USB wireless network adapter (Netgear) on my PC my problem is solved, even though it would still lingers in the back of my mind about the setup though the regular Cat5 LAN cable..

Thank you guys in anticipation.
