Java and sendmail

Hi,

I'm a new sysadmin maintaining a webserver that's also running sendmail. Normally, when email is sent from the webserver, it's routed through the general mailserver used by the network I'm on. The website hosts an applet that has to send email. When I run the applet directly from the webserver using appletviewer, the email the applet sends is correctly relayed through the general mailserver. But when I run the applet via my browser from my own workstation, my workstation becomes the relay, and the email doesn't get sent. The log entries look like this:

Quote:
Sep 1 11:44:54 webserver sendmail[16774]: j81IisE16774: Authentication-Warning: webserver.network.com: workstation.network.com [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] didn't use HELO protocol
Sep 1 11:44:54 webserver sendmail[16774]: j81IisE16774: ruleset=check_rcpt, arg1=myemail@network.com, relay=workstation.network.com [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx], reject=550 5.7.1 myemail@network.com... Relaying denied
Sep 1 11:44:54 webserver sendmail[16774]: j81IisE16774: SYSERR: putoutmsg (workstation.network.com): error on output channel sending "500 5.5.1 Command unrecognized: """: Connection reset by workstation.network.com
Sep 1 11:44:54 webserver sendmail[16774]: j81IisE16774: lost input channel from workstation.network.com [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] to MTA after startup
Sep 1 11:44:54 webserver sendmail[16774]: j81IisE16774: from=myemail@network.com, size=0, class=0, nrcpts=0, proto=SMTP, daemon=MTA, relay=workstation.network.com [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx]
(I've replaced the real IP addresses with x's and the real hostnames and email addresses with webserver.network.com, workstation.network.com, and myemail@network.com.)
At first I thought that relaying on the webserver needed to be opened up, but that didn't work. The programmer who wrote the applet has tried changing the mailserver in the applet to be the general mailserver instead of the webserver itself, but it's not working either. I'm not sure what else to do and would greatly appreciate any assistance.

Thanks!

S. Chen
