Issues with OpenVPN, Transmission Web UI, external network

Hey guys, so I'm pretty familiar with Linux but my networking is pretty sub par. I was hoping to get some assistance with this.

I currently have my raspberry Pi running on my home network running transmission web-ui for torrenting purposes (like totally legal linux torrents for example). I recently setup OpenVPN on my pi and have it setup and working as it should so my IP is masked with a new PIA IP but obviously with the new IP I cannot access transmission on the public IP at port 9091. I'm wondering if there is a way for the web-ui to be accessible but to have the VPN still working and hiding my traffic.

Options I have considered are setting up some sort of a cron that runs every few minutes that, now I don't know the best way to do this, but that would check for an active torrent being downloaded in some way, such as having the Incomplete folder that transmission supports being turned on and whenever a file is added to that folder it starts the OpenVPN connection. My concern with this is that it would interrupt the torrent and it would then fail. I'm not 100% sure how this would work and I'm not the greatest at bash scripting still, (working on it) so any advice in that regard would be great.

I also looked at binding transmission to a specific network device like eth0 that runs on my local IP address so I could still access the web ui but then I'm not sure if the traffic would continue to be filtered by the VPN. I'm assuming not.

Basically I'm reaching the ends of my knowledge and ideas and was hoping for some further input.

Thanks in advance guys. Let me know if you need more information from me.

I think a good option for this would be to configure port forwarding for Private Internet access to forward all port 9091 requests to my ISP public IP. That would let the Transmission client still run behind the VPN but would allow me to connect to the web ui to add torrents externally. I already have the port forward rules set in my router so I just need to figure out how to port forward with privateinternetaccess.

Anyone have any ideas?

I figured out how to port forward with OpenVPN and private internet access following the guide here
https://www.privateinternetaccess.co...advanced-users

I'm still having issues accessing the public IP though.

Yup it looks like the script is not actually working to open the port. I got the script to run and get the following.

Loading port forward assignment information..
{"port":56783}

However when I check the public IP address that I am currently connected to using

curl ifconfig.me I can see using a tool like

yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/

that the port 56783 is closed.

Any advice on this?

I have figured this out.

Not sure what changed but tried another few times and I am now able to access transmission outside of my network.

I used the script I found earlier and that generated an open port for me. Once that port was open I opened the port on my modem to my raspberry pi and then set transmission to listen on that port. Now it looks like everything is working as intended.

If anyone runs into any issues with this let me know I'll be happy to help.
