Issue with NFS on one machine, not the other

Trying to set up NFS, and am following this tutorial:https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-configure-nfs-on-linux

on 1 machine this command works fine:
Code:
sudo exportfs -arv
But on the other I get this error:
Code:
exportfs: /etc/exports:1: syntax error: bad option list
exportfs: No file systems exported!
I have followed the exact same steps (I think and hope) on both boxes, first on 1, then the other. All fine up to this point.

What could be my mistake, or what am I missing?

Try it without -a:
Code:
sudo exportfs -rv

That error seems to tell you there is a syntax error in the /etc/exports file.

Two questions come to mind.
1. Have you looked at that file and carefully verified that it is correct.
2. Is it possible something is different in nfs of the two systems such that the syntax that works on one is not correct on the other.

In fact the link you provided clearly shows a different syntax for nfs v2 & v3 when compared to v4.

On the local server, 'man exports' should give you some specific pointers about that file as well.

Looking at the source I can see two possibilities: 1) missing closing parenthesis; 2) white space between options.

Well now - I don't know what happened, but while I was messing with this, somehow my root partition filled up - it more than doubled.
Couldn't figure out which files were the culprits, and anyway something got badly corrupted somewhere someho and even restoring a backup didn't help.

Have had to do a complete new install, and am probably going to forget NFS and try Samba. Which reminds me, there are no windows machines here, so why did NFS tell me I needed Samba?

Gonna call this solved, I huess.

As another alternative most file browsers also have a built-in sftp client. No configuration required as most distributions automatically install ssh.

You can setup a browser shortcut or use sshfs or just sftp from the command line.
