Question ISP with linux

Hi

I'm going to finish my RHCE course and was thinking about making
a mini ISP project.

I searched on google and for books and found zero info.
maybe someone can advice where can I get this info?

Thanks

Welcome to LQ. Can you add some details about what you mean when you say you want to "make a mini ISP project"? The better detail you can provide the better suggestions others can offer. -- J.W.

Hi

Thanks for replying.
what I wont to do is giving to a few dozens of people internet connectivity .
with non offical ip addresses.
using NAT , the porpose is to build the system ,not the speed or anything else.
I read about pptpd and pppoe-server, played with them also.
but I dont know the big idea of routing from the home computer to the supplier.
I know how to connect my linux box to my isp true vpn/pptp and trying to understand
the all way of the connection.
what is better for using , pppoe or pptp or ipsec/freeswan

is it a project someone can do without any special high speed conectivity?

I think all you're asking is how you can share your ppp dialup line. Here are some notes I made when I built a slackware box for use as a dialup router. You'll need to put a NIC in your linux box if you haven't one, so you can share your Internet connection over a local network.

How to Build a Dialup Router with Slackware

1.Load Slackware and configure the modem (U.S. Robotics works well)
2.PPPCONFIG (The /etc/ppp scripts are where you setup dial on demand. If the modem connects a too low a speed, set the baud rate lower)
3.Load Squid. Squid caches the web pages to make browsing of dialup faster for commonly referenced pages.
4.chmod 755 /etc/rc.ip_forwarding
5.download the dyndns.org client to setup a domain name for use with the e-mail server
6.use webmin to setup Linux Firewall and IP Masquarading (the PPP connection must be up to setup the firewall initially.
7.Add ping and sleep statements to rc.local to bring up the link on boot so that the IPTABLES don't fail. ppp0 must be up when iptables comes up.
