ISP Configuration
Hi! I have a laptop running Mandrake 8.0 in a 10GB partition and a cable modem to access the Internet, but my ISP changed my IP and I don't know how to change the configuration.
The first time I configured it, I used the KDE, but it does not seem to work very well with my machine, and I have not been able to change the configuration again...
Could you tell me how to do it, or the man where I could find the solution?

Hi, this is my first post so I hope I'm doing this right. I also have
a cable modem but my ISP gives me a dynamic IP. When you
said that your IP had been changed, I thought that maybe your's
was dynamic also. If it is, you need to get the IP using dhcp.
My ISP offers static IP, but a dynamic one is almost ten dollars
cheaper.

When you say KDE isn't working for you, do you mean that you were trying to make the change using Netconf (K->Configuration->Networking->Netconf)?
Unfortunately, Netconf is the most user-friendly way to do it in Mandrake 8.0, but if you need to do it manually (which is usually more reliable), try doing
Code:
ifconfig eth0 xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
where xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the new IP.
Alternately, I think you can manually edit the "IPADDR=" line of /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 to get the same effect, but I'll admit that it's been a while since I've had to configure my NIC so that might not be all there is to it.
<edit>
rsmaples snuck in an important point while I was typing my response. As said, if your IP changed because your ISP uses DHCP, what I posted above doesn't apply.
</edit>

but you have to think, if your isp is giving you a dynamic ip, you can't truly go into the settings making it or setting it up as a static ip, you need to set up your system for dhcp, then you won't have this problem each time it changes.
