I dont know much about traffic shaping, heard that cbq or htb can do that, but some people told me it cannot be done on private class ip's

This is my setup.. have a broadband connection... and 10 users...its a home connection...my problem... server is a linux box with modem on usb and a network card going into a switch on local network...it is used for routing now(lets call it GW).I would like to put another server on lan to do traffic shaping (lets call it SHAPER).So basically i want to do this...SHAPER should have only one network card and use GW as gateway (gateway should only accept connections from SHAPER)... and on SHAPER i would like to do the traffic shaping itself... but it will have only one network card and be on internal lan.. will have 192.168.x.x type address... and home computers will have him as gateway instead of the real GW.

So what can i do? is there a solution to my problem? Thank you very much

It would be easier to just let GW (if it's a Linux box) to do all the shaping (and probably firewalling as well). Doing this on two different boxes makes things much more complicated, which is unnecessary.

Any particular reason why you would want to do it on two different boxes?

As frostschutz said adding another box just to do shaping is unnecessary and will probably make it even more complicated. For setting up shaping see http://lartc.org/howto
