Question Is it too much to ask to know how to change my system name?


I need to know if I can change my system name and if I can please tell me how.

change from what??
darkstar to ??

config your network card and it should ask what you
want to call your system..........
mine is Chessmaster 1-4

if your refering to your hostname issue

hostname <new host name>

from a terminal as root. if your refering to your netbios name for file and printer sharing add the line

netbios name = <your netbios name>

under the global section of /etc/samba/smb.conf. as 320mb stated you haven't given us much to work with information wise. hope that helps.

i should elaborate

i am on a school network on the server which controls our name is student.collegename.edu

so when i login i get a message saying trip.student.collgename.edu is not a valid host

it says i can add something to my /etc/hosts

I don't know what that means...so i guessed and i was gonna add trip.student.collegename.edu to the the hosts file but it would not let me
