is feasible to network 2 machines with modems?


Hi,

Im a redhat 7.2 IA-32 user, and im wondering if i can network mi old machine to the new one with just the modems

What sort of modem, I hope it's not one of those Win modems.

im afraid it is

the modem on the old machine is a winmodem , that sucks eh? its one of those PCtels PCT266
but i guess i can just install windoze or DOS on ther other, right?

Well you can't just plug the cable into both modems and then expect them to talk to each other. You have to have a telephone net to connect them on. Probably an internal one because I doubt you will want to be paying the costs for using an external phone net.

All in all, it'd probably be cheaper (and certainly easier) just to get a couple of NICs and do networking proper.

But, technically I can't see why not...you'd just be using TCP/IP over modem instead of TCP/IP over LAN...which is pretty much what standard dial-up (inet connection) is all about, isn't it?

Yep. It used to be called 'null modem'ing.
