Irregular download bursts
 

Hi there,

since a few weeks I've got a DSL connection. When I plug the dsl modem directly into my hub, every computer on the LAN gets a(static!) IP via DHCP. Download speeds were great and regular.

Then I decided it would be better to hide the LAN behind a nice Linux firewall, so I put my linuxbox between the modem and the LAN. But since then all my downloads come in irregular bursts and I can't shake the feeling that my linuxbox is (read: 'I am') to blame.

My config:

P166 - 64MB RAM - 2.2 kernel - simle ipchains firewall - 1024kbs DSL connection - two 10Mb NIc's (Ne2000 clone and 3COM) - 10Mb hub.

Can somebody please put my mind at ease :) or tell me in which direction to look.
