IRC RFC Problem

I'm having problems making my IRC Bot connect to channels on the irc server. Isn't it just JOIN #channel. Because I get an unknown command response from the server, and yet X-chat can connect and join. It's veeeird. Any idea's?

Is there a better way to check if one should input all of the information user/nick/channel etc. than checking for things like Notice AUTH :*** Checking hostname etc.
