ipv4 over ipv6

I recently had two issues, and I was wondering what your take on it would be?

1. Ubuntu headless local server. apt-get update would hang at 0%. When I force ipv4, bingo it works.

2. I tried to scp from a CentOS laptop, and it kept failing. I forget the exact errors. I thought I was having issues accessing a non standard port, but when I force ipv4, it works.

i don't know *why*, but even though all our enterprise switches support IPv6, my linux servers tend to stall updates if they try IPv6 first, and therefore i almost always disable it. It is possible (although i do know know) that the ISP is not IPv6 ready.

Some ISP's have been slow with ipv6 roll-out. The one I use (TWC, CNY) just started routing ipv6 traffic several months back. Maybe you could check traceroutes, packet captures, or those 'Am I ipv6 Ready?' web sites.
