Iptables and Kernel 2.2.

Is there absolutely no way to run iptables with the 2.2 kernel other than by first upgrading to the 2.4 kernel?

I've inherited a firewall running ipchains but I'm more conversant with iptables. I'm really hoping there's a kludge for this. The firewall is running on Redhat Linux 7.0 (Guinness) - uname reveals 2.2.16-22smp.

Cheers,
kb.

iptables and ipchains are kernel modules and as far as I know there have never been patches produced against a 2.2 kernel so I'm afraid that you'll need to upgrade in order to get the functionality.

Thanks David.

Looks like it is fast approaching compile time. I was really trying to avoid compiling as some mission critical apps are running on this and other machines on 2.2 kernel.

So what is the main advantage to running iptables as opposed to ipchains? I believ I read somewhere that the connection tracking module is not available in ipchains - what exactly does this imply?

Cheers,
kb.
