IPCop install fails on 8139 NIC

I have an IPCop install problem.
I have been using Smoothwall GPL and I like it but there is a problem with accessing the Smoothwall website. Either my ISP is blocking the Smoothwall site or the Smoothwall site is blocking my ISP. I can always access the Smoothwall site from a shell account. I could also download the updates from there. The problem is that Smoothwall does not believe there is an update until It can connect to the site weeks or months later. So I am attempting to use IPCop.
First problem was a bad floppy drive that has been replaced.
Now I can boot from the IPCop install floppy, but it freezes at the driver install for my network card. This is after a dozen tries using manual, select, and probe on every choice for the 8139. I only see 8139too and 8139cp on both the Smoothwall and IPCop driver floppies. The documentation for my cards prefers to mention the older rtl8139 driver.
Not only do I not see that this is a common problem, I see people suggesting that an 8139 NIC be used for better compatibility.
Any suggestions?
I have gotten into the PC and confirmed everything is seated well. It worked with Smothwall previously. Tom's bootdisk shows memory space assigned for each NIC.

Are you using the 1.3 version, i had a similar problem with mine. I am running to 8139 nics in mine. It would keep locking up during the install process when it was auto detecting the nics. All i did was downloaded the file again from the website and re-installed it again and it worked. Maybe the same problem, if not try the 1.2 version and see if that works.

hope this helps

Trying the previous version is not a bad idea, fotoguy. I think I may try that.
Yes, that is exactly where my install locks up. Although I have tried both auto detect and manual. I have redownloaded the ISO twice and made 3 different sets of boot floppies (for HTTP install). Same problem each time.
I may try the 1.2 IPCOP and then a reinstall of Smoothwall if that is not sucessful.
Dang, this was supposed to be a 30 minute install....

See how it goes, must not like your nics. Yes you might be better going back to smothwall if 1.2 version doesnīt work. If had seen a few posts on different sites around the net that 8139 chipsets have quite a few problems.

UPDATE: All's well.
IPCop 1.2 was the flawless 30 minute install I was looking for.
Apparently there is something really different with 1.3?
I noticed floppy drive activity during the 1.2 install as it checked for network cards. I do not remember any floppy activity during the 1.3 network card detection and freeze.
Thanks again for the suggestion fotoguy.

I had the same thing happen so i went to 1.2 for a while then had another go at the 1.3 version and it worked, dont know why.
It seems a few poeple seem to be having problems with the 1.3 version. Have been running it for over 6 months now and itīs going smoothly.

Just a tip, if your running cable and you like to do online gaming, put more ram in it atleast 80 mb or more, less lag on the servers then.
