Question IP to connect from XP to Mandrake machine?

I got this network of two PC's. On the one that has a DSL-connection to the internet, and is my major PC, Windows XP is installed. On the other, I have installed Mandrakelinux 10.1.

Using the "Shared internet"-option of XP, and the DHCP-setting on Mandrake, I have managed to get the Mandrake-system to connect to the internet (this happened fairly easy, I must say). I also managed to share the files on my XP-machine to the Mandrake-machine through the network. I therefore know the network is fine.

What I want to do now is to connect from the XP-machine to the Mandrake-machine using SSH, FTP or telnet. I also want to be able to connect to the Mandrake-machine from "the world" using SSH or even through http. I have no idea what IP-address I should use to get from the XP to the Mandrake-machine. And how can I tell my XP-machine that it has to forward all SSH- and http-requests to my Mandrake-machine?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

(I'm afraid this is pretty much a newbie-question, and I sincerely apologize for that!)

hi there

if u r using the insternet sharing opton from winxp then u can also skip the DHCP and keep a fixed IP on linux mandrake
for that , in th mandrakemachine specify the ip address of the windows machine as ur gateway
and restart the network service

regards

Yup, this answered the major part of my question. But how can I connect to the Mandrake-machine from the internet? How can I tell XP to forward all web- and ssh-traffic to the Mandrake-machine, so that I can use the Mandrake-webserver?

To connect to your linux box from outside..
say by ssh. then
i would recomend using static IP for the Linux box
and then on port forwarding on the Windows XP..
and define a rule that forwards all incomming connections on port 22 [ SSH ]
to the IP of you linux box
that should work pretty much..
this is much easier if your Linux Box was your primary box..

for windows to forward the ssh connection i think NAT is required.., right??
or can we do it some other way also

Yes u need NAT enabled.
you could use some firewall like zone alarm [ one that i know of ] to do such things..
IN zone alarm >> Firewall >> Expert
add the rule..
you should be able to get in..
from the out side..
dont know abt other firewalls..
i have never tried them

Have only used IP tables on Linux
but Quite sure Zone Alarm provides NAT facility..
