IP Subnetting

I am Abr from Pakistan

I am facing a problem which is as under:

I have given an ip address say 172.172.200.1 mask 255.255.255.0
now I want to ping 172.172.0.1 or 172.172.10.1 it does not reponse. If I ping 172.172.200.30 it responded.

What could be the reason of this. Please tell me soon.

Regards

Hello and Welcome to LinuxQuestions,

Please don't hijack a thread but start your own to give your question/problem the attention it deserves.

Aside from that have a Google search for IP subnetting like this one.

Kind regards,

Eric

mrabar -- the series "255.255.255" in the subnet mask, applies to the first 3 quads of the IP (172.172.200) meaning those 3 quads must match for communication to happen. This is likely why your third ping to 172.172.200.30 worked, but the others failed. If you change the mask to 255.255.0.0 then the first two examples should work as the third does. Please tell us if that works.

Meanwhile, I will have your question moved to a new thread of its own -- in the future, please do not tack a question onto someone else's pre-existing thread :)

Welcome to LQ,

Sasha
