ip masq.
hi,
I just bought an old comp from ebay to use as a router. I'll get straight to the point.. I have 3 computers total and if i buy two ips from my ISP, can i use one of them for the router and the second one for my other linux box which is going to be a webserver. I was just reading the how-to about ip masq and it said i can not use it. If i cannot use that ip i bought from my isp, and just do everything through 1 ip, will my dns server still work? What do i have to do?
comp 1 = router
comp 2 = name server, web server, and use it to ftp in to make changes from other computers
comp 3 = windows box to surf the net

I don't see why you need 3 machines - you can do it with 2...
comp 1 = Windows box
comp 2 = name server, web server, and use it to sshin to make changes from other computers, router
Everything should work fine - its works fine for me at home..

Everyone i've talked to until now said i should use an old computer as a router. I did not know if i could use other services with it such as nameservers and stuff. Ok so now i know that, can u guys recomend a good how-to on ip masq? I am using Redhat 7.1 and i am going to upgrade my kernel to 2.4. and lastly is it safe to do everything on one computer?

There are a few IP-Masquerading/NAT related HOWTOs on http//www.linuxdoc.org - have a look there. Its really, really, really simple to setup.
As for safety - yeah, it should be fine, logically there is little difference between having the services running on the same box and having a seperate router. I think the big thing is if you are going to have local users on the machine, in which case you probably would want to have an external router, but as this is a home systems (by the sounds of it) I don't see you should have a problem. If you want a better opinion on this start a thread in the security forum and I'm sure Raz will give you some good pointers.

If you have a pretty fast computer with enough ram 128MB or more would be prefered, You can do it all with that one. I have been using one for everything including playing games and surfing as well as providing internet access to two windows computers, hosting a roger wilco base station and half-life server.
By port forwarding you can also host games on the windows machines, like Nascar 4 and Heat. Use MSN Messenger, Roger wilco, etc.
I have recently upgraded to RH 7.1 and have not got everything back on yet but it is just a matter of setting up the ipchains and ipmasqadm.
I think the reason for the old computer as a router you are talking about is because it can be done with a minimum machine, to save money or whatever. Nothing says you can't have a 1200MHz with a Geforce card and 1.5G of Ram screeming away.
I can see no need for more than one ip address unless you want to have two servers. All I ever had was one, even when I was using dialup for my connection.

Roger Wilco. A very good, light weight voice communication program for in game communication via voice activation or push to talk key. Logon to Base station or other computer hosting. A base station on a static ip makes a good always on meeting place for people to log on. free http://www.resounding.com/

Yes, I think that's an add for Sports Babe TV. I guess with free stuff you have to get paid sooner or later. But the program has no adds at all.
