IP Already in use - VERY WEIRD

I have Enigma (Redhat 7.2)
and it's behaving pretty weird...

If I run SETUP and configure the network to use DHCP, runs fine..
BUT.. if I run SETUP and tell it to use a static IP, at bootup tells me that "some other host is using such IP" thus not assigning it.

The funny thing is that I'm SURE 100% that that IP is not in use, PLUS if I do

ifconfig eth0 IP netmask NETMASK

it sets it up..!

Did any of you heard about this before ?

Ed.

that IP is used . when u try with setup the redhat won't assign u the ip , but u can assign it manually and the person using that ip is no longer able to use it.

I, like Mircea, am skeptical about that. The best way of course to check, and if you've already done this I apologize, is to simply unplug the thing, have it assign itself a static, and if it still claims something else is using it, then its obviously RedHat being nasty as the machine is on a subnet of 1.

A dodge if this is the case, is to ignore the vagaries of that RH script and just stick the ifconfig line in rc.local.

If this is not the case, and it does assign itself an IP fine, then there's probably some dodgy machine on your network (any win boxes in the mix?), that is keeping your box from auto-negotiating with the router/switch/hub with that IP.

Cheers,

Finegan
