IP Addressing static and dynamic

Is it possible to have both static IP addresses and dynamic addresses on the same network? I need to forward a port on my linux box so that it is available to me and I need to have a static IP address to do port forarding on my router (Netgear WGT624)

If by this you mean having some machines assigned by DHCP (ie. by your router) and some have static IPs then yes that's perfectly normal. If you have a look at the settings for DHCP on your router you'll probably see its already configured not to use all the available addresses for the DHCP pool (on mine it only used 64-254 by default IIRC). That means that you can statically configure any machine with an address outside the range used for DHCP.

Its also possible with DHCP to associate a MAC address with a particular IP, that means that although the IP is still assigned via DHCP (ie its 'dynamic' in the Windows config) any machine its configured for will actually always get the same IP. The first way is probably easier though.
