IP address / remote connection

I have a DSL internet connection with a modem which assigns a different dynamic IP address every time I turn it on (I assume this is the same everywhere unless the internet provider is able to assign an static IP).

A few questions:

1. How can I find the address of my machine? I know there are some websites like http://www.lawrencegoetz.com/programs/ipinfo/ which reveals IP address as xx.xx.xxx.xxx. Is there any more sophosticated way, like a command or something? And, is there a any way to find the name of the address, instead of xx.xx.xxx.xxx the IP address itself?

2. How can I fix the address? Someone told me by configuring my DHCP server? How exactly? Where should I start from?

3. My friend and I are using a router, so any time we switch on the the modem, we get same IP address, how can I connect (ssh) to his computer? What command/switch(es) exactly?

We both use SuSE distro.

Thanks!

1. Since you use a router, using a website would be your easiest/quickest solution. http://www.whatismyip.com is a good one. You can find out the address name by using: nslookup <ip address>.

2. If you are referring to configuring your modem to use a static IP instead of the ISP assigned, dynamic IP you are probably out of luck. Use a dynamic dns provider like http://www.dyndns.org

3. ssh user@host

nslookup gives me the NAT gateway, not the name of the address of my machine.

Is this the exact format "user@host", and how can I find the host?

Thanks.

If you are both on the same router then you could try in the other computer the command

Code:
$ifconfig
which returns:
Code:
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx
          inet addr:192.168.1.2 Bcast:192.168.1.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
"inet addr" is the IP of that computer. In this case the IP that your ISP assigns to your router has nothing to do with your internal network communication. So if his IP is 192.168.1.2 you could do

Code:
ssh user@192.168.1.2
