ip address of ppp0

Is there some way I can control the inet address of ppp0 ?
It changes on connecting via my modem to the net. That makes allowing forwarding in my firewall for specific machines hard, as I can't tell them what the gateway is in advance.
Also, what is the p to p ip?
This is the output of ifconfig while I'm connected

ppp0 Link encap:Point-to-Point Protocol
inet addr:192.168.100.244 P-t-P:192.168.100.12 Mask:255.255.255.255
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING NOARP MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:234 errors:2 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:239 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:3
RX bytes:170698 (166.6 Kb) TX bytes:46603 (45.5 Kb)

I'm working my way through the Howto ipmasquerade, but any tips would be appreciated.
Last time the inet address was 192.168.100.247 And I have my gateway on the other machine set to 1921.168.3.9, the ip of the eth0 on this machine?
Tricky ha?

it's called dialup... erm.. deal with it

if you want a static IP you need to get your ISP to provide this service. this is not going to happen now is it?

Ah, but if I've got a dynamic ip from my isp, I don't suppose that is in the 192.168.x.x region, so who is giving ppp0 that address? As far as I've read, that is only for private use.
But the nis howto has a firewall setting to use with dynamically assigned ips. I just thought ppp0 daemon was giving me the number. And maybe I could tell it what to do.
Geuss I'll have read on in the Howto.
